Free For All Tuesday No. 100

Happy New Year to all of you.Too much to drink last night? No.... good...

There are still places available for the meet up in Manchester on 9th March and London on 16th March. Please see this post for details about both events.

Tuesdays are your chance to ask any Filofax related questions you might have.

So fire away and we will collectively try to answer your questions or offer opinions.

  1. I just purchased an A5 Finsbury. The top ring has a very slight gap. Will this get worse? Sounds odd, but it seems to be more aligned since I have been opening and closing the rings to add pages.

  3. Can I ask: when it comes to Webfind days do you prefer posts as videos or as text and photo posts?
Just wondering as I want to do more filofax posts next year and they might as well be in the best format for you all! Having just started to play with Utube my impression is that it is far easier and quicker for me to record a video but that it takes more time and a wifi rather than 3G connection to watch them.( Although that said on a bad day I will willingly trade mos of my monthly 3G allowance to be cheered up by watching a video by Chrissie just for her beautiful accent and attitude!
    What do you think?

    2. I love videos just because im too lazy to read sometimes (lol) plus as you said it can take ages to write & take pics for a blogpost that would be as detailed as a video

    3. I love both Helen - but am happy to wait until I get home to watch vidoes - I often watch at least one each night on my iPad when I go to bed! Perhaps you could do a variety depending on the topic?

    4. Hi Helen,
I love the videos because sometimes you need the verbal and moving video to show a particular aspect, eg how to train a Filofax. But photos do show much greater detail (higher resolution) so there is a trade off of going video only. So mix and match as you see fit I guess.

In my case I often have a photo session for a few posts at a time, so I can be seen hauling photo kit and a pile of Filos upstairs!

I'm actually considering buying a 'photo tent' to make it easier to photograph organisers without worrying about the background. Doing the photos in the summer is fairly easy here but not so good in winter!

    5. Personally I prefer text and photos......

    6. I also prefer text and pics. I admit I rarely watch the videos at all.

    7. I prefer text and photos - I have the attention span of a gnat and find it really hard to watch videos more than 2 minutes long :-)

    8. I don't watch videos. Unless Rori did it, I'll watch hers. Otherwise I can't sit through someone talking about anything. I much prefer reading and seeing photos.

    9. As a newbie to the world of Filofax I love videos. So much more detail!

    13. I, too, prefer text and photos. If the videos are short, I will watch them, otherwise I speed through them just to see what's being discussed. I prefer to be able to really study the photos and take my time with the text -- videos don't allow me to go at my own pace.

  4. The solution to the video / pics dilemma is to duplicate. Write a post with pics, and produce a video for Youtube, ensuring that each method can get the message across without necessarily referring to the other.

    1. True. That doesn't solve my 'how to blog better in less time' dilemma though :)
I like to set almost impossible goals....

    2. This is what I do. I've done a few You Tube videos, because even though I don't like to watch videos myself I know some people do prefer them. I have to admit it's much easier to do a 10 minute video than to spend 3 hours taking and loading photos and writing and editing text.

  5. I prefer the videos. no real reason, I just sometimes find blog posts very "I did this, then I did this, then this happened." Videos tend to be more freely spoken.

  6. Does anybody use an a4 Filofax? How do you find it? I have an a4 logic in red, but really want to use an a5.

    1. I have an A4, but the main issue with using that size is the amount of desk space it takes up when open! But very easy to create pages for it, and all our diary inserts work too :-)

    2. I agree with Steve - I'd love to use mine more, but it takes up so much space! An A5 is fine on a normal desk.

  8. I have been lurking here and just wanted to stop by and say I love your site plus i am the proud new momma of a purple Personal Malden. I love it! Because I "Lurk ' here I have made label inserts and
Month on 1 page inserts thanks to all your great videos and posts. My question is how do I keep my Maldens's leather nice and supple with losing its purple color.

    1. Hi Karen
I assume you mean 'without losing it's purple colour'

I would suggest occasionally using a cream leather care product that you can find in shops for shoes or handbags. But test it in a small space somewhere on the inside before you use it on the outside.

Avoid anything with any solvents in it, so no aerosols, they will dry out the leather.

  11. Happy New Year everyone and fellow Filo enthusiasts everywhere.
Does anyone use a Pocket/A5 Filofax combination, as I'm interested in trying a new combination this year?
Any hints or tips gratefully appreciated, but hope you all have a very good one (New Year)

    1. I am using A5+pocket :o)
My main/working-Filo is the A5 Finchley and I use a pocket Chameleon as a wallet. The pocket Chami holds a smaller calendar and my shopping-list.
The A5 gets reeeeally heavy to carry around...peak at my blog, there I describe "the situation" a bit!
      Happy new year!

  13. Happy new year everyone! I've got a question, for those of you using a non-leather binder. I've been gifted a new A5 for my birthday (yay!), and it's a textured imitation leather.

It doesn't feel sticky when you touch it, but the back has lifted colour from a magazine it was resting on, and when you write on it, it sounds like it's sticking to the table (that sort of popping noise as it lets go). Any ideas on what I can clean it off with? I'm not sure about Nivea, since it's not actual leather.

    1. Hi Wendy - Happy New Year to you too! I'd be tempted to start by using a weak solution of fairy liquid to see if it is just some coating or something. If this doesn't work, it might be worth using something like Nivea to give it a more 'oily' coating that won't stick to other items. As mentioned above though - always try anything like this on an inconspicuous place first just in case. Which model of filofax is it?

    2. Thanks Alison, will give that a try :) It's erm... not actually a filofax. It's a desk edition sized Debden Bella in a sort of burgundy red as seen here.
