Happy New Year everyone!

With a new year comes new diary inserts. Which type of inserts are you using this year? Weekly horizontal, vertical, week + notes, daily, day on two pages, something you created yourself? Are you using something different than what you used in 2015, or the same? Are you as yet undecided on what you'll use this year?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything ring-binder related.

Wishing you all a very happy 2016 from all of us here at Philofaxy!

  1. Have to say I'm really disappointed at the apparent lack (disappearance?) of inserts with black ink. I received packages and ALL are blue ink, which I do not care for. That has changed my set up plans.

For my A5 and Personal, I'll be using One Day Per Page with time slots. In the Personal, I've got the tabbed month on a page (blue...) and in my A5, I've got the vertical/pull out yearly calendar.

I'm really hoping to solidify a "go-to" setup early in the year so that way I can change binders on a whim without it throwing me into utter planner dysphoria.

Happy new year to all the Filofaxers!

  2. For 2016 I am using the One Day on a Page Business Diary pages (black ink version). It has been my experience that this format works best for how my mind processes information. I rely on a highly modified "Getting Things Done" methodology, and this page format works best for me. I have experimented with several other set-ups in the past year, but I always sem to come back to the Business Diary pages.

I have a Filofax set up with a Week on Two Pages diary from Inkwell Press that is used as the family Filofax. This serves as a central place to record his and hers appointments, notes, etc that the other needs to know about. Reminders about putting the trash carts and recylcing bin go here, doctor and veterinarian appointments go here, unique work times go here, and so forth.

  3. I am just printing off, and intending to try, the completely freeform DPP A5 diary from the Philofaxy website. I've not had a freeform diary for many years and am looking forward to giving it a try.

Secondary motivation for this decision is that my lovely wife has given me a beautiful Sheaffer 300 fountain pen as a Christmas present, which I am very keen to use, so I am now very concerned with paper quality, and the easiest way to solve that particular problem is by using Conqueror A5 from my local stationery store.

A beautiful pen, Noodlers Prime of the Commons blue-black ink and Conqueror 90gm paper......2016 is looking good already!

A very Happy New Year to all!

    1. Congrats on your Sheaffer 300, nice pen, David!

Sorry, not clear about the 'completely freeform DPP A5 diary' you refer to. Which template is it?

      Happy New Year!

      Thanks,

      Mark

  4. Well here is where I say thank you very much to Philofaxy for the printable inserts. With a little bit of modification I've gone with Week PP plus Notes for Personal and Week plus Notes PP for the A5. May the best layout win!

    4. Great review too, Laurie....

Walked through Agendio's website and all the choices....my head's spinning....but exciting to think about the possibilities too....

Did you or anyone else try writing on their paper with a fountain pen? Wondering about feathering or bleedthrough issues.....

    5. Sorry I don't have any fountain pens, but the paper is 90 gsm so I would expect it to work well with fountain pens.

  6. Happy 2016 to all!

Curious to know if anyone has tried the 'Filofax Refillable Notebook' ?

Sounds a bit odd I know, since all ring-bound binders are refillable, but I'm referring to the wire-bound notebook that uses the punched paper with slits that allows you lift out or put in pages without opening up rings.

Has anyone reviewed this product here?

Anyone tried it and have any comments?

    Thanks,

    Mark

    1. I have bought one, but haven't used it yet. The paper is very thick and smooth. I think it is great for taking notes.

    2. Thanks, Maria....

Will be interesting to hear what you think if you use it....and how good the paper is for writing on....

    3. I have a Filofax notebook. The paper that ships is adequate for gel, ballpoint and some felt tip and rollerball but the alignment of the tabs is such that you can use a Circa or ARC punch to add paper to it easily thereby adding any quality paper you like. I made my own tabs, bookmarks and upgraded the paper and I like the Filofax notebook a lot now!

    4. That's very good to hear, Ana.....thanks!

Do you find the notebook cover holds up OK over time?

  7. One more thing....

Watched the video regarding using a Filofax binder as a Bullet Journal.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8QzuOf_fVc

Thought the idea for it was quite clever and of course very flexible by having it in a ring binder instead of the typical bound Bullet Journal.

Seems like you get the best of both worlds this way....what do you all think?

    Thanks,

    Mark

    1. Hi Mark
Yes I tend to agree, I can't function in a bound book for this sort of thing in quite the same way as I can in a ring bound organiser. When I first saw the video back in 2013. I came up with this half way house solution to give us the best of both worlds.

    3. Also, wanted to mention this variation on the Bullet Journal system I came across called StrikeThru. Quite interesting....

Need to spend some time to go through it a bit more to be able to really compare it to the Bullet Journal system. But seems to look very good.

Would be interested in what others think about it....

  8. This is the second year that I am using the Day Runner Two-Page-Per Day Monthly Planner Refill (481-225-16) in my A5 planner. I keep 3 months (past month, present month and next month) in the planner. The rest of the 2016 monthly pages are stored in a Wilson Jones 2 inch, 8.5 X 5.5 inch binder under monthly tabs. At the end of the year, the binder will become the archive for 2016.

  9. Starting off the year with the Filofax Week Per Page & Notes (Personal). I'll supplement these with either the To Do page or the Undated Day Planner page. I start a new job at the end of the month and may go back to the Week On Two Pages. This is the first year in 2 decades that I haven't used a Week on Two Pages format.

At Christmas my husband gifted me with a beautiful A5 Filofax Original in Pillarbox Red. I can say with conviction that I do not like the vertical layout. Not sure how I will use the A5, but I am enormously happy with the size.
